The progress of technology has meant more and more goods becoming information. Hilarious attempt to turn one back from information into something easier to control. Non-hilarious part is that if they actually did this, most consumers would just put up with it, the way they inexplicably put up with current DRM practices. Was ordering a DVD for someone recently, and they wanted to make sure it had the right region for their player! Bizarre!

Seriously, we need to get this crap sorted out before we get magical Diamond Age nanotech, every product becomes informational, and society collapses.
